How to play DVD

DVD turns the old DVD player's screensaver into a game of chance. The logo bounces about a TV screen, changing colour every time it touches an edge, and here it always hits a corner within 20 bounces. You bet on which corner, on an odd or even bounce, on a block of five bounces, or on the exact bounce. Corners pay 3.84×, and the rarest exact bounces pay 132.37×.

The aim

Guess where and when the logo hits its corner. A bounce is each time it touches an edge, and the corner hit itself counts as one. So a logo that touches the top, then the right, then lands in the bottom-left corner has hit on bounce 3.

You can bet on as many spots as you like in a round. Every spot that matches is paid.

Bets and payouts

Pays are per coin bet and include your stake: a 10-coin corner bet that wins pays 38 coins.

Bounce numbers aren't equally likely. The shape of the screen makes some much rarer than others, so each exact bounce pays by its own odds.

  • A corner (each 1 in 4): 3.84×
  • Odd bounce (46.9%): 2.04× · even bounce (53.1%): 1.80×
  • A block of five, 1–5, 6–10, 11–15 or 16–20 (each 1 in 4): 3.84×
  • Bounce 1, 6, 13 or 20: 11.48× · 8 or 18: 12.63× · 11 or 15: 14.05×
  • Bounce 4: 15.81× · 3: 18.09× · 10 or 16: 21.13× · 9 or 17: 25.40×
  • Bounce 2: 31.83× · 5: 42.63× · 12 or 14: 64.49× · 7 or 19: 132.37×

Placing bets

The bets go on the remote control. Pick a chip (10, 50, 100, 500 or 1,000), then tap the spots you want. Tap a spot again to add another chip; right-click it, or press and hold on a phone, to take one off. The arrows by the bet step to a bigger or smaller chip, past 1,000 and up to your balance.

Undo takes back the last chip, Clear takes everything off and ×2 doubles every bet. A round's bets add up to at least 10 coins, and up to whatever you have.

Your bets stay on the board after each round, so the next one is a tap away. Coming back from the lobby, you can keep your last bets or start with a clean remote.

Using the controls

Press Play to send your bets. The TV switches channel and the logo sets off, slowing down as it closes in on a corner. Sometimes it misses one by a hair, and you'll see "So close!".

Skip, or a tap on the TV, hurries the round to its last bounces. Turbo makes every round quicker. On a phone the remote slides away while the logo bounces and comes back after the corner.

Keys: Space or Enter to play, S to skip, U to undo, C to clear, T for turbo.

The Blibzz server picks where the logo starts and which way it goes, at random among the 10,480 starts that reach a corner within 20 bounces, all equally likely. The game replays the bounces from there, so what you watch is exactly what was played.

Tips

  • Every bet returns between 95.5% and 96% over time. Corners and blocks return exactly 96%; even is the lowest, at 95.5%. Your balance will drift down over a long session.
  • Corners and blocks of five are the simplest bets: one chance in four, every round.
  • Exact bounces pay big because they rarely land. A few chips spread across them make the count exciting, but expect most rounds to miss.
  • The last few corners and bounces don't affect the next one. Every round's start is drawn fresh.
  • Your bets stay on the remote between rounds, so check them before you press Play again.
